Series of blasts rock capital, three more hurt

Within hours after a blast at Kirtipur Municipality early in the morning, two more explosions occurred at different places in Kathmandu Valley Tuesday.

Two children were injured as they played with a stray bomb left by suspected Maoists at around 9.30 this morning. The injured - Niranjan Panta and Srijana Panta have been hospitalized as they sustained serious injuries. Eyewitnesses said Srijana lost three fingers from one of her hands. The incident occurred at Panta Tol.

Similarly, the Maoists detonated a bomb at the office of Ward No. 29 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City at Thamel this morning. The blast injured peon Raj Kumar Pujari and damaged the office building. nepalnews.com mbk March 23, 04

Dear All,

This morning the Maoist plant another bomb right in central Thamel. The bomb blast happened in early morning (7:00), so nobody hurt but the whole city became so nervous, Army and police were everywhwere, there was traffic jam in virtually every area!

Just finished the Poon Hill circle from 19 to 22 Mar.
It is cloudy all days and the temp was 35C.
FYI,
1. It is still safe to trek in tourist area.
2. On 21 Mar, Maoist block the road from Pokhara to Naya Pul.
It also block the supply and information tranfer of the Nepal army to Naya Pul.
3. Maoist start attack in the area of Beni on 21 Mar early morning and that's why I
heard a lot of bombing when I going back to the Ghorepani from Poon Hill.
4. On the trail to Ghandruk from Ghorepani, my guide told me that we should go back
to Ghorepani if the helicoper of Nepal army drawing near. It was because the Nepal
army can't differentiate the Maoist and tourist.
I found I can only carry my own Back pack on the first day of trekking. How come your guys / girl can carry your own backpack in other long long trial like ABC or EBC in winter time? Any suggestion for my next visit? (If possible)

Dear All,

I just came back from my EBC+Kala Patter + Gokyo trekking. Believe it or not I took only 13 days!

I took 9 days to get to Gorak Shap and went to the EBC in the afternoon and Kalapatter the second morning. Then we went through the Cho La pass (Stay at Dzhong La overnight). We arrived Gokyo in the afternoon the second afternoon and climbed the Gokyo ri the second morning. After than we walked more than 10 hours from Gokyo to Namche Bazzar!!!! I was so homesick!!!!! Yesterday we went from Namche to Lukla, 6 hours walk and this morning I arrived Kathmandu. I miss civilizatio so much!!!!

Welcome back and congratulations!

How would you compare Kala Pattar and Gokyo Ri? Someone said that Gokyo Ri is better. Moreover, is the trail through Cho La very tough? Did you camping at Dzhong La?

I hope I will go Kala Pattar again in the future. I think I will walk similar to your path (though may not be able to complete in 13 days!)

Dear All,

I am still in Kathmandu and I have the following information to share with you.

1. Two days ago Maoist plant a bomb right in Central Thamel. I was 50M away from the blast at the time and heart the huge booming! Although only three local people (one police) injured, this is the first time they plant bomb in Thamel! The atmosphere here is quite tight, personally I don't suggest anybody to stay in this city for too long (I will set off for my 21 days EBC trekking tomorrow, so no need to worry about it!)

2. I got an agency for my EBC trekking, the package includes:

21 days EBC+Kala Patter+Gokyo (through Cho La Pass) KTMLukla domestic flight ticket + Lodge Accomadation + 3meals + 3 drinks...... The price is US$665. Actually this is not the lowest price, you can find some agency offering US$5XX. Just be careful if the agency is government registered!

3. Remember to bring you SAR password when you visit Bahatupur. The ticket is selling at NRS750 but for Chinese it is only NRS100!

4. I bing Nikon F80+24-120 lens, 35 rolls of Kodak Elitechrome and 25 rolls of Fuji Superia 400 to Nepal. I feel the combination is quite enough. I strongly suggest auto-focus camear becuase you will be so tired along the way of trekking, your hand will become so shaky sometimes, it's simply not good idea to manual focus your photo (it will slow you down dramatically).

5. Tbhe slide development service in Kathmandu is quite reliable. I developed 15 rolls of Kodak Elitechrom (E6 Process), all with satisfied reault. The price is NRS150 for slide, NRS40 for Negative (development only). Negative print cost at NRS70 for 3R, NRS120 for 4R.

I will try to share more information with you when I reach Namche Bazzar (hope the internet connection there isn't too slow)

Regards,

Tower in Kathmendu

Yes, I will be going to visit Nepal during the Easter holidays (4 - 18 April). And the flight of Thai Airways is quite full at this moment. One of the return trip from Kathmandu to Bangkok has to be on waitlist so far.

But another problem is, the Maoists are making a lot of troubles at present in the remote mountain regions..... I hope I could have a safe journey!
