Maoist bandh hits life in Gandaki zone
A general strike called by the Maoists affected normal life in the districts of Gandaki zone on Saturday.
In Pokhara, vehicular traffic remained largely off the road and major marketplaces wore a deserted look throughout the day. Few public buses did ply on the city streets with the help of security officials but all long-route vehicles were stranded in Pokhara, reports said.
The bandh is intended to disrupt the civic reception of the King and the Queen in Pokhara on Sunday. The Civic Felicitation Organizing Committee has said it has made arrangements for the transportation of people attending in the program from outside Pokhara. 400 buses have been kept ready for the program, which will be escorted by security personnel.
Similarly, the bandh affected normal life in Gorkha, Lamjung and Tanahun districts also where shops remained closed while no passenger buses ventured out the whole day. nepalnews.com mbk March 27 04

Minister Thapa rules out talks with Maoists
Home Minister Kamal Thapa Saturday said that talks with the Maoists at the present situation are unlikely.
Speaking at a face-to-face program organized by the Kaski branch of the Reporters’ Club Nepal in Pokhra today, Thapa said the government was not going to give the Maoists another chance to strengthen their military in the name of talks.
“Maoists used the ceasefire period to reinforce their military and later walked out brashly. The government is not going to take any chance this time round,” said the minister.
Thapa who is also the spokesperson of the government maintained that the very statement of the Maoist leadership saying talks are part of their war negates the essence of dialogue with them. “Unless they change their mindset, talks with will are useless,” he said.
Challenging the rebel outfit to assure the people that they are serious for a peaceful settlement, he said, there was no need for international mediation including that of the UN. He, however, dubbed UN secretary general Kofi Annan’s concerns serious.
Thapa was of the view that the Maoists have pushed back the possibility of talks by launching the brutal attack in Beni Bazaar, Myagdi. “If they want talks, they should first of all make an environment,” said he. “No such environment is in sight at the moment,” he added.
At the program, Thapa also informed that preparations for the civic felicitation of the King and the Queen in Pokhara on Saturday have completed claiming the program was going to be a grand success. nepalnews.com mbk March 27 04

Just finished the Poon Hill circle from 19 to 22 Mar.
It is cloudy all days and the temp was 35C.
FYI,
1. It is still safe to trek in tourist area.
2. On 21 Mar, Maoist block the road from Pokhara to Naya Pul.
It also block the supply and information tranfer of the Nepal army to Naya Pul.
3. Maoist start attack in the area of Beni on 21 Mar early morning and that's why I
heard a lot of bombing when I going back to the Ghorepani from Poon Hill.
4. On the trail to Ghandruk from Ghorepani, my guide told me that we should go back
to Ghorepani if the helicoper of Nepal army drawing near. It was because the Nepal
army can't differentiate the Maoist and tourist.
I found I can only carry my own Back pack on the first day of trekking. How come your guys / girl can carry your own backpack in other long long trial like ABC or EBC in winter time? Any suggestion for my next visit? (If possible)

We arrived Gokyo in the afternoon the second afternoon and climbed the Gokyo ri the second morning. After than we walked more than 10 hours from Gokyo to Namche Bazzar!!!! I was so homesick!!!!! Yesterday we went from Namche to Lukla, 6 hours walk and this morning I arrived Kathmandu. I miss civilizatio so much!!!!

How would you compare Kala Pattar and Gokyo Ri? Someone said that Gokyo Ri is better. Moreover, is the trail through Cho La very tough? Did you camping at Dzhong La?
I hope I will go Kala Pattar again in the future. I think I will walk similar to your path (though may not be able to complete in 13 days!)
